Dyson’s Winchester connection

We’ll be singing the Dyson Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in D at our final Evensong for the year on Saturday 13 November at 5pm.

George Dyson (1883-1964) was director of the Royal College of Music 1938-1952, where he had also been a student. On his retirement he moved to Winchester, where he lived for the rest of his life. The photo is of us just before Evensong in Winchester Cathedral early in 2018. The entire eastern half of the Cathedral was closed to tourists at the time, but a friendly priest very generously let us into the ambulatory for a private tour. You can see the gold statue of Joan of Arc in the background, facing the tomb of Cardinal Beaufort who had been present at her execution.
