At our next Evensong 5pm, Saturday 12 March, we’ll be singing the Brewer Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D, and the anthem ‘O pray for the peace of Jerusalem’ by Howells. Herbert Brewer was organist of Gloucester Cathedral from 1896 until his death in 1928. One day he was introduced to a 14-year-old boy from a financially struggling family from nearby Lydney, who loved music so much he would ask to be let out of school so that he could go home and compose music. As a result of this meeting, Herbert Howells began music studies with Brewer, with financial support from the local squire. The rest, we might say, is history.
The image is of the stained-glass windows in Gloucester Cathedral dedicated to the memory of Herbert Howells, taken by our Organist & Choir Director – and unabashed Howells-lover – Peter Kelsall.
Howells will be meeting Brewer again at our first Evensong for 2022. We hope to see you there!
