Holy Saturday Cantata Service

We are delighted to welcome the Adelaide Cantata Band back to Pilgrim, this time to present Buxtehude’s cantata cycle, Membra Jesu Nostri, BuxWV 75 (roughly translated as ‘The Seven Wounds of Christ on the Cross’).

The Adelaide Cantata Band is a welcome addition to Adelaide’s growing early music scene. Under Musical Director Kim Worley, the ensemble is dedicated to presenting authentic interpretations of the cantatas of Bach and other baroque composers and works, in both concert and liturgical settings, as much as possible on historical instruments.

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was a towering figure of the North German Baroque, whom Bach revered, and from whom he learnt a great deal. His cantata cycle, Membra Jesu Nostri, is a masterpiece of high Baroque, employing vividly expressive counterpoint and plaintive word painting to convey the suffering of Christ on the cross.

The work will form part of a service at Pilgrim on Holy Saturday, 16 April at 3pm. For details: https://www.facebook.com/events/1327730867639186.

This performance by the Adelaide Cantata Band is generously supported by Arts SA. Free of charge.
